What to look for when choosing a partner to outsource your EDI

While the reason for outsourcing EDI might be clear, the choice of Service Provider is not always so clear cut. There are a number of considerations when considering a Managed EDI Service:

  • One size does not fit all - it is often appropriate to outsource only those parts of your EDI infrastructure which are appropriate at a given time and address a real business issue. This means that your potential partner’s services need scalability and flexibility.
  • Reliability - expect the service to operate according to strict SLOs and expect issues to be addressed quickly and effectively. Moreover, this management needs to be pro-active, so that where possible a problem is identified and fixed before the customer, or their partner, becomes aware of the issue.
  • Visibility - a company not only needs to comply with industry standards and regulations, but also needs to be able to demonstrate that they do.
  • Security - Any process that is handling EDI or other B2B messaging data needs to be secured using standards that are acceptable to both parties. A Managed Service needs to offer a range of security solutions which fit not only the data but the connections that are being used.

The relative importance of each of these factors will, to a large extent be decided by the very reasons you are choosing to outsource in the first place. It is therefore important that any potential partner understands the reasons why you are considering outsourcing.
